Hybrid Respirator

I was frustrated by the lack of a comfortable and effective respirator on the market so I decided to waste valuable quarantine time making one.

I’ve completed a design that’s reasonably producible, and have 8 prototypes out in use. A couple have flow across the country a few times, and I’ve used my own for months with no issue. That’s enough to show conclusively that it works, right? 👍

TBD exactly where this project goes, but I’m unlikely to attempt to mass produce them. I’m at least making the design available in case someone’s super motivated to make some.

Design Summary

Assembly guide here.

  • Air is filtered by three HEPA cartridges (from a vacuum cleaner)

  • A centrifugal blower pulls air through the central filter, and air is exhausted through the side filters

  • The blower is sized to achieve mild positive pressure during a calm inhalation

  • The part of the mask that seals against the face is soft fabric on the outside and impermeable ripstop nylon on the inside

  • Power is provided by a USB battery pack that attaches to the neck strap
